Philip Travers

The Cornish landscape and rural heartland are Phil Travers’ main preoccupation, often including figures and animals which combine with their surroundings and add an intriguing narrative element to his work.
His paintings are reminiscent of the lost tradition of eighteenth century pastoral scenes, executed with an understanding of and a nostalgia for rural life, which is rare today. His paintings make us long to walk down those leafy lanes in the deep cool of the trees and we experience through his work the peculiarly subtle beauty of the English landscape. His ability to convey moods and feelings in his paintings to produce atmospheric and dramatic images displays real sensitivity. The delicacy of the mists rising from water on a late summer dawn, for example, are beautifully recreated by Travers and his technical competence is beyond doubt. His early success was in the demanding area of commercial studio art and design but his true calling has always been that of a landscape painter. Phil Travers was born in London in 1945. He studied at Sutton School of Art and the London School of Printing.
