Jenny Aitken

Jenny graduated from UCW Aberystwyth in 1997 with a BA Joint Honours in Art & Art History In 2006. She was a finalist in the Artist Magazine Awards and in 2008, voted Derbyshire Artist of the Year. Jenny lives in Derbyshire, on the edge of the Peak District, and her studio looks North West towards the peaks. However, her roots are in Alderney, in the Channel Islands, and as Jenny says, “The sea is in my blood.. My love of the coast is strongly reflected in my work. I want to tell a story with a painting, and achieve a full sense of a place. Each piece is born from strong visual and emotional memories, where my associated thoughts are as integral to the painting’s creation as the shapes, colours and light. A finished piece, for me, whether abstract or representative, has to be felt as well as seen. I want movement, light and texture. That is what inspires me in a painting: the portrayal of the experience of a place”. Jenny works in oils, and acrylics, both in the studio and direct from the landscape. Jenny loves visiting and painting in Cornwall where the beauty and power of the sea and its interaction with the landscape provides a strong provide her with endless possibilities for her work.
