Mark Callaghan was born and grew up in Cornwall. He studied Typography at Reading University before a successful career as a Creative Director in award winning London based design consultancies. Turning to painting full time in 1999, he travelled widely both in Europe and the United States of America. He has exhibited in Houston Texas, Charleston South Carolina, New York City and Nantucket, Mass. In 2002 he was commissioned to paint a series of Landscapes of New York City for the new MGM hotel 'New York New York' in Las Vegas. His work is included in corporate and private art collections internationally. Much of his painting is executed in the plein-air tradition, rapidly working to capture the changing effects of light on the landscape. His impressionist approach aims to create an implied rather than literal reality, which he invites the viewer to complete. The majority of his paintings are in oils, using glazes to create transparent washes of colour. Returning to Cornwall, recent themes have included sunsets and evening light on the rural landscape around St Ives and the harbour after sunset, with its twinkling lights and reflections at low tide.
