Raymund M Rogers

'He handles oil paint with the deft flickering touch of a pastellist, never heavy handed, at times more French than English, as though a pupil of Roussel. Indeed he epitomises the aims of the New English Art Club when it was founded a century ago - the emergence of a fresh and personal vision from the perfect blend of English and French traditions.'

Brian Sewell

Raymund's exceptional talent has been recognised by the critic Brian Sewell who wrote of him: 'He handles oil paint with the deft flickering touch of a pastellist, never heavy handed, at times more French than English, as though a pupil of Roussel. Indeed he epitomises the aims of the New English Art Club when it was founded a century ago - the emergence of a fresh and personal vision from the perfect blend of English and French traditions.' Raymund's work revolves around themes of mystery and intimacy.

As a viewer we catch a fleeting glimpse of a scene and the people in it. His figures are frozen in a moment - we see them either tossed in a sunlit wave or paddling in a shady brook. Light and dark are beautifully described, with sparkling summer sun breaking through luxurious shade or bouncing off moving water. Portraits are tender and delicate, even the paintings that are not peopled are scenes viewed as if through a gap in the landscape, a narrow window in time or space. The result is undeniably lovely. Raymund's work has been shown by the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Royal Society of British Artists. Trained at The Royal Academy, he had been living and working in Boscastle, Cornwall from 1986 until his sadly premature death in 2011.
