Born in Brixham, Devon, Ruth studied at Newton Abbot, Dartington and Crewe & Alsager Colleges of Art and also with her father, Harold Bowyer, who was a professional artist. Ruth has spent many years painting landscapes and portraits and she is well know for her pencil portraits on Brixham harbour. However, it is her still-life paintings that have brought her most acclaim. She won the prize for the best painting by a new exhibitor at the West of England Academy in 2006. She comes from a family of artists. Her grandfather, John Bowyer, was a landscape and portrait artist and was the principal at the Putney School of Art. Her uncle, Alan, was a landscape and portrait artist, and her aunt, Hilda, was a miniaturist. She has exhibited in many galleries in the South West and Harrogate.
